I love living in Stockton and I love riding my bike throughout Stockton. There are so many great neighborhoods and so many interesting places. But for as long as I have lived here (nearly all of my life), I am embarrassed that there are so many parts of it that I've never seen. That's about to change.
Recently, I set out to ride my bike on every street in Stockton. Yes, every street!
There are many lenses from which to view Stockton. News headlines, social media, out-of-towners' opinions - everyone seems to have one. Or, I can actually go see Stockton, all of it.
Here's my goal: between September 27 and December 31, a little over 3 months, I am going to ride my bike on every street in Stockton. Not just anywhere on every street, but the entire distance of every street (well, except for the gated communities).
Day one was September 27, the day of Bike Fest, the bike ride and festival put on by the San Joaquin Bike Coalition, an organization for which I am proud to serve as a board member. On that day, I led a group of riders from University of the Pacific through downtown Stockton. It was wonderful hearing participants say that they enjoyed their first bike ride through our downtown. Since then, in two months, I have spent 75 hours on my bike and have logged 1,053 miles within Stockton. In all of the years I've been riding a bike, I had never ridden a thousand miles in two months! I am not done yet. With only a little over a month to go, I still have a lot of road to cover. Literally.
Where I've been so far
I am enjoying riding every street in Stockton, seeing parts of the city I've never before seen. There is a lot of beauty in Stockton, and seeing it from the bike has been a great experience so far.
More to come... more pictures and videos, too. I can't wait to share when I'm all done!
See you out there!
